BWS TECHNOLOGY
Brainwave Signature Tech: First Used in Space in 2040s
Every person creates a highly-unique, faint, biorhythmic electric signal from their brain. These are referred to as their Brainwave Signature, or BWS. The technology designed to harness and track a person's BWS is called BWS Technology.
In 2042, BWS monitoring was only possible in space as there was too much interference on Earth to distinguish a BWS from other radio and electronic signals. In space, an astronaut's BWS was identified by his or her helmet, and from their BWS a host of bio-signals could be monitored — as well as the identity of the astronaut could be logged and tracked on the Moon, in transit, and on Mars — and secure communications could be directed solely to that astronaut. Further, BWS was the core controller of the astronauts access to certain areas, zones, equipment, and information.
A Primer on Brainwave Signature Tech in 2061
BWS TRACKING ON EARTH
By 2061, BWS technology has advanced significantly, and primarily by CIEX who developed it first in space (as with so many technologies) 20 years prior. Now BWS tech not only works in space, but also on Earth where it can be tracked by detectors on CIEX's fleet of Cloud Blimps (a re-use of the old term "cloud technology"). Made from an impenetrable, two-inch thick synthetic material (developed for Mars missions), these blimps never lose their hydrogen and are impossible to shoot down — though many (especially in Texas) have tried, even with military-grade lasers.
Many Americans have their BWS on file with the government. Those who know they're being tracked are all active duty military personnel, CIA officers, FBI agents, police forces, and felons — but of course many others are tracked by the all-powerful Department of Homeland Security.
The only way to help (it isn't foolproof) to be 'invisible' to tracking is to be indoors — preferably underground — otherwise under a roof lined with a special, expensive, digital-lithium-based fabric (D-L) that emits random bursts of high-frequency signals. (The current debate is whether or not digital-lithium causes a degenerative autoimmune disease that is beyond even genetic cures.) Most government buildings are D-L lined, including the White House. D-L is made by a subsidiary of CIEX.
When outdoors there are a number of hats and scarves designed with D-L lining. (The fashion of the day in the early 2060s is bowler hats for men and scarves or berets for women.) The D-L lining is controversial due to unknown health risks.
BWS ENFORCEMENT
A new BWS Enforcement Division is established in the Department of Homeland Security. Its purpose is to enforce all laws regarding the manufacturing, sale, use, recording, and tracking of BWS, BWS information, and BWS-based weaponry.
It is widely presumed (accurately) that this division does far more than enforce laws relative to BWS, but also actively tracks the BWS of millions of people in the name of national security.
It is in this Division that Paul Saltier goes to work in 2061.
BWS WEAPONRY
It is illegal for private (non-military or police) persons to possess a BWS gun or its ammunition, BWS-guided micro-missiles.
A BWS gun can launch a micro-missile without aiming. Micro-missiles have a tiny rocket engine that can take the micro-missile up to speeds beyond Mach 2 for over 1,000 miles. The micro-missile must be programmed with a specific BWS before it is launched. Once in flight it can be guided by signals from low-flying CIEX blimps to precisely hone in on a unique brainwave signal.
Because those blimps are privately owned, floating mass servers — providing data for thousands of purposes, not just BWS — the U. S. Supreme Court has ruled that there is no way for the U.S. Government to lawfully block them, shoot them down, or otherwise scramble their signal.
BWS CAPTURE PREVENTION
VIPs and other dignitaries go to significant lengths to keep their BWSs highly secret. This is especially true for the U.S. President. But even everyday people don't want their BWS captured or hacked.
A number of technologies have arisen to scramble your BWS and/or keep it from capture (the illegal recording of someone's BWS--done with an isolating device that must be within five feet of the target). But those technologies have so far been overcomeable.
In 2062, Paul Saltier, working on behalf of the DHS (officially), developed a small BWS collector that can be strapped to a person's wrist.
In 2063, a highly risky method of permanently changing a person's BWS was developed — also with guidance from Paul Saltier. It was trial tested on volunteer prisoners.
